CDL Exam FAQ
How many questions are on the CDL permit test?
The CDL General Knowledge test has 50 questions. You must answer at least 40 correctly (80%) to pass. Endorsement tests vary: Hazmat has 30 questions, Air Brakes has 25, Tanker has 20, Passenger has 20, School Bus has 20, and Doubles/Triples has 20. Each requires 80% to pass.
What score do you need to pass the CDL knowledge test?
You need a score of 80% or higher on all CDL written knowledge tests, including the General Knowledge exam and all endorsement tests. This applies in every U.S. state.
What is the difference between a Class A and Class B CDL?
A Class A CDL allows you to operate any combination of vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, provided the towed vehicle exceeds 10,000 pounds. This includes tractor-trailers and semis. A Class B CDL covers single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, such as straight trucks, large buses, and dump trucks. Class A holders can also drive Class B vehicles.
Do I need a CDL for a box truck?
It depends on the weight. Box trucks (straight trucks) with a GVWR over 26,000 pounds require a Class B CDL. Smaller box trucks under 26,001 pounds GVWR typically do not require a CDL, but you should verify your specific state's rules. If the box truck is used for hazardous materials, a Hazmat endorsement may be required regardless of weight.
How long does it take to get a CDL?
Entry-level CDL training typically takes 3 to 7 weeks at an accredited truck driving school. After completing a CDL training program, you take the CDL knowledge tests at your state DMV, then a behind-the-wheel skills test. The full process from starting school to receiving your CDL usually takes 4 to 8 weeks, depending on your state's scheduling.
How much does it cost to get a CDL?
CDL school costs range from $1,000 to $10,000 depending on the school and program. Many trucking companies offer sponsored CDL training where they pay your tuition in exchange for a commitment to work for them after graduation. State DMV fees for CDL testing typically range from $50 to $200.
