Texas CDL Knowledge Tests

To get a Texas CDL, you must pass the appropriate knowledge tests at a TxDPS office:

Texas CDL Industry Overview

Texas is the largest state by land area in the contiguous U.S. and has one of the highest demands for commercial drivers in the country. Major trucking corridors include I-35 (Dallas to Laredo), I-10 (Houston to El Paso), and I-20 (Dallas to West Texas). The Permian Basin oil fields and Houston's port create year-round demand for CDL drivers.

Texas also has a large Spanish-speaking CDL student population. CDL Pass USA offers full Spanish CDL practice tests for Texas drivers preparing in Spanish.

Texas CDL Skills Test

After passing the knowledge tests and holding your Texas CLP for at least 14 days, you must pass a CDL skills test consisting of:

  1. Pre-trip inspection — demonstrate knowledge of vehicle inspection
  2. Basic vehicle control — backing, alley docking, parallel parking
  3. Road test — demonstrate safe driving on public roads

Skills tests in Texas are conducted at TxDPS third-party testing sites. You must supply your own vehicle for the test.
