Tanker CDL Practice Test
Prepare for your Tanker CDL endorsement (N endorsement) with free practice questions
covering liquid cargo handling, liquid surge, center of gravity, inspections, and tanker vehicle
operation. The official Tanker knowledge test has 20 questions and requires an
80% passing score.
What is the Tanker CDL Endorsement?
The Tanker endorsement (N endorsement) is required to operate any commercial motor
vehicle designed to transport a liquid or gaseous material in a tank with a capacity of 1,000 gallons
or more. This includes fuel tankers, milk trucks, chemical tankers, and water tankers.
Tanker CDL Test Topics
The Tanker CDL knowledge test covers:
- Liquid surge — how liquid moves in the tank and how it affects vehicle handling
- Center of gravity — why tankers are top-heavy and how this affects braking and turns
- Baffled vs. unbaffled tanks — how tank design affects liquid surge and vehicle stability
- Tank inspection — what to check during pre-trip inspections specific to tanks
- Loading and unloading — safe procedures including outage (expansion space)
- Retest requirements — pressure test and leakage test intervals for tanks
- Safe driving with tanks — stopping distance, braking, and maneuvering with liquid loads
Tanker Endorsement Requirements
- Valid CDL (Class A or B)
- Pass the Tanker written knowledge test (20 questions, 80% required)
- No background check required (unlike Hazmat)
- Tanker endorsement is renewed with your CDL renewal
Tanker CDL Practice Test Tips
- Understand the physics of liquid surge — this concept underpins many test questions
- Know the difference between baffled and unbaffled tanks and their stability differences
- Study outage requirements — most liquids expand when heated and tanks cannot be completely filled
- Learn the pre-trip inspection checklist specific to tank vehicles
- Practice all 20 Tanker questions until you score consistently above 90%
